A Gentle Guide to Brewing White Tea
Soft, delicate, and worth slowing down for.
White tea rewards gentleness.
Light, floral, and naturally delicate, white tea is one of the most beautiful loose leaf teas to brew — but it asks for a little patience.
Too much heat can make it taste bitter. Too little leaf can make it feel thin or flavourless. But when brewed with care, white tea becomes soft, silky, and quietly luxurious.
White tea is not a rushed cup.
It is a slower kind of ritual.
🌿 Why White Tea Needs a Softer Steep
White tea leaves are usually larger, lighter, and less tightly rolled than black tea or green tea. That means they take up more space in your scoop, but may weigh less than you expect.
Because of this, white tea often needs a little more leaf to bring out its full flavour.
It is also more delicate than many other teas, so boiling water can overwhelm the leaves and flatten the softer floral notes.
🫖 How to Brew White Tea
- Use more leaf: Start with about 2 teaspoons per cup.
- Use cooler water: Around 175°F / 80°C is ideal.
- Steep gently: Start with 1–2 minutes, then taste and adjust.
If your cup tastes too light, let it steep a little longer in short 15-second intervals. If it tastes bitter, try slightly cooler water or a shorter steep next time.
The best cup is not always the strongest one.
Sometimes it is the one that lets the delicate notes unfold.
💧 The Best Temperature for White Tea
The best temperature for white tea is usually around 175°F / 80°C. This helps protect the delicate leaves while allowing the flavour to open slowly.
If you do not have a temperature-controlled kettle, boil your water and let it rest for a few minutes before pouring it over your tea.
⏳ How Long Should White Tea Steep?
White tea can be flexible when brewed at a lower temperature. Start with a shorter steep, then taste as you go.
- 1–2 minutes: light, soft, and delicate
- 2–4 minutes: fuller, rounder, and more flavourful
Because white tea is gentle, it is worth paying attention to the cup as it changes. A few extra seconds can bring out more sweetness, more florals, or more body.
🌙 Make It a Ritual
White tea shines in quiet moments.
A slow morning. Rain against the windows. A soft lamp. A book left open beside your cup.
This is not the tea you drink while rushing out the door. It is the tea you drink when you want the moment itself to feel softer.
